Clean Water And Sanitation For Karen Communities

Project Overview
BCTFN supported a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project delivered by the Karen Hilltribes Trust in Ban Lui Bon village in Mae Hong Son Province.
The project included:

community training

water quality monitoring
Community members participated directly in planning, construction and long-term management
The Challenge
Remote Karen communities in northern Thailand often face limited access to safe drinking water and sanitation infrastructure.
Communities living in mountainous areas may rely on unsafe or unreliable water sources, contributing to preventable illness and poor health outcomes.
Poor sanitation and limited water access can also affect:

livelihoods

community wellbeing
-
opportunities for women and children
Reported Impact
The project delivered significant improvements for 165 Karen villagers.
Reported outcomes included:

households with sufficient water during dry season increased significantly

improved access to safe drinking water

reduction in open defecation
-
improved hygiene practices
-
reduced time spent collecting water
-
improved community health and resilience
The project also contributed to improved wellbeing and dignity for women and girls within the community.

Long-term sustainability and community ownership were central to the project design.

Supporting Hilltribe Education Through Safe Student Accommodation

Project Overview
BCTFN supported the construction of improved boarding accommodation for children attending Ban Huay Hom School in Mae Hong Son Province.
Many students attending the school come from remote hilltribe villages and require safe accommodation in order to continue their education.
The project focused on replacing outdated and inadequate dormitory facilities with safer and more hygienic accommodation.
Community Participation
Teachers, villagers and volunteers participated directly in the project alongside specialist construction workers.
The wider fundraising initiative successfully raised additional funds to complete the project and improve future boarding facilities.

Bright Dawn Foundation – Rural School Health Programme

BCTFN supported annual medical check-ups for approximately 750 children attending rural schools supported by the Bright Dawn Foundation.
