The 2008
SET for Society Program

In 2008, the SET for Society Program will follow its well-established format. SET scholarship students at Rajabhat University in Nakhon Sawan and Naresuan University in Phitsanulok will build lunch canteens/activity halls for children at two rural primary schools. They will also make other necessary improvements to the schools, which usually include renovation of the children’s toilet block and repair of playground equipment. At this time potential schools are still being surveyed by the project management teams of each university.

Above, members of the student management team for the 2008 Rajabhat University Project have already surveyed many rural primary schools but have not finally chosen one for their next project. Far left is Chai, the 2007 project leader. In 2008, he will be advisor to the team. Far right is Suwit, the 2008 team leader. Suwit, 23, is a third-year student of Public Administration. He has been a member of the work force on two other Rajabhat projects and was deputy leader in 2007. Suwit has been supported by SET since his first year at university and has a special scholarship from a family in the UK, guaranteed to take him through to a Master Degree. Suwit is both sensible and practical and is going to be an excellent project leader.

SET students at Nakhon Sawan Vocational College will visit an old people’s home. They will spend the day chatting with the residents and helping them in any practical way they can. They will also entertain them with music and dance and serve a special lunch. A team of students usually challenges the home team to a bowls match (which they always lose). About 40 students will join the visit.

100 students at Nakhon Sawan Technical College will visit an AIDS hospice in Lopburi. There is little the students can do on a practical basis, though they spend time chatting with some patients and comforting them. The 100 students – mostly teenage boys - will learn about the dangers of unprotected sexual activity but also, it is hoped, they will develop a more caring and sympathetic attitude towards those who already suffer from AIDS.

About 50 students from Nakhon Sawan High School will make their fourth visit to Nakhon Sawan School for the Handicapped. The One-Day-Fun-Day is always very successful, not just because the handicapped students enjoy the fun and games but also because the SET students themselves always benefit greatly from mixing with the resident children.

At this time the venue has not been chosen for the annual outing for children from Saengsawan Orphanage in Nakhon Sawan. In the past, the children have stayed overnight at an elephant training camp, have toured the sights in Bangkok or have enjoyed a day at the seaside. The elephant training camp visit is very popular but the camp can no longer offer sufficient overnight accommodation for the forty children and 10 carers. It is likely that in 2008 the children will again spend a day at the seaside.

Above, it is likely that this will be the site for the 2008 Rajabhat project. A canteen/activities hall will be built on the vacant land, as an extension to the building on the left.

The budget

The budget for the 2008 program is likely to be much the same as for 2007 – around 350,000 Baht. The program costs usually come in below that figure but because all the activities involve rental of coaches or other transport, with rising fuel costs, the margin is likely to be closer in 2008.

The trustees of The SET Foundation thank the BCTFN for its generous support of the 2007 SET for Society Program. We hope that support can be continued in 2008.
